Dressing for the Desert: The Basics

Dressing appropriately for quad biking and camel rides in Marrakech makes a significant difference to your comfort and enjoyment. The Moroccan climate, the dusty trails and the physical demands of the activities all influence the ideal outfit β€” but the good news is that the essentials are simple, practical and things you're likely to already have in your travel wardrobe.

For Quad Biking: What Works and What Doesn't

The most important rule for quad biking is: no sandals or open-toed shoes. The foot controls of a quad require closed-toe footwear, and the heat from the engine can be uncomfortable against bare feet. Trainers or walking shoes are ideal. Boots are good for extra ankle protection but not essential on the well-maintained circuits in the Palmeraie and Agafay.

Trousers or jeans are strongly preferred over shorts. The inside of your knee is in close proximity to the quad frame during riding, and bare skin can cause minor abrasions or heat discomfort on longer rides. Trousers also protect your legs from dust and sun. Avoid very loose or baggy trousers that could catch on the vehicle.

On top, a fitted long-sleeved shirt or light jacket works well. Even in warm weather, a long sleeve protects your arms from sun and dust. In cooler months (November–March), a mid-layer is recommended as the wind-chill effect at riding speeds can make it feel significantly colder than the ambient temperature suggests.

For Camel Rides: Comfort and Modesty

The key consideration for camel riding is inner-leg comfort. The camel saddle sits between your legs, and a raised fabric seam in the wrong place can cause discomfort over longer rides. Soft cotton or linen trousers without thick seams are ideal. Avoid very tight cycling-style leggings, which provide no padding. A modest, flowing style is also culturally appropriate and tends to be more comfortable in warm temperatures.

Sun Protection: Essential in Any Season

The Moroccan sun is deceptively strong, even in winter. Apply SPF 30 or higher to all exposed skin before your tour. Reapplication isn't typically needed for a two to three-hour tour, but longer full-day tours benefit from a small travel-size sunscreen for midday reapplication. A wide-brimmed hat is useful for camel rides where you're moving more slowly and have less wind cooling you down.

What to Leave at the Hotel

Leave jewellery, expensive watches and other valuables at your hotel. Phones and cameras can be brought but keep them in a secure, dustproof pocket or bag. Avoid wearing white or very light-coloured clothing if you're concerned about dust staining β€” even in the Palmeraie, some trails generate a fine red dust that can discolour light fabrics.
