Safety Gear: Non-Negotiable

Before any discussion of trail rules or technique, let's start with equipment. The single most effective safety measure for quad biking is wearing the right gear. At a minimum, this means a properly fitted helmet, eye protection (goggles or glasses), and gloves. In Morocco, reputable tour operators provide all of this as standard — if an operator doesn't offer safety gear, it's a red flag worth taking seriously.

A helmet should fit snugly on the head without being so tight as to cause discomfort. It should not rock forward or backward when the head moves. Goggles protect the eyes from dust, flying debris and wind — particularly important in the Agafay Desert where grit can travel at speed. Gloves protect the hands in the event of a fall and improve grip on the handlebars.

Pre-Ride Safety Check

A responsible operator will conduct a pre-ride safety check on every vehicle before each tour. As a rider, you can observe this process and should feel free to ask questions. Tyres should be properly inflated and free of visible damage. Brakes should feel firm and responsive. Throttle should be smooth and not sticky. The kill switch (emergency stop) should be functional and you should know where it is before departing.

Trail Rules to Follow at All Times

Always follow your guide. Never overtake the lead guide vehicle. Maintain a safe distance from the rider in front — a minimum of 10 metres at normal speed and proportionally more at higher speeds. Stay on designated trails and do not attempt shortcuts or explore uncharted terrain. If you need to stop for any reason, pull to the side of the trail and signal to your guide.

Speed and Conditions

Beginners should always start at the slowest available speed setting and only increase pace as confidence builds. Many quad accidents occur because riders advance too quickly before they've developed the muscle memory and spatial awareness needed to handle unexpected situations. The trails in the Palmeraie and Agafay are not technically demanding, but maintaining a comfortable speed gives you the reaction time needed to navigate safely.

Health Considerations

Do not ride a quad if you have consumed alcohol. Do not ride if you are taking medication that causes drowsiness. Inform your guide if you have any heart conditions, back problems or recent injuries. Pregnant women should not participate in motorised quad activities. Riders who feel unwell during a tour should signal their guide immediately and stop riding.
