Are Camel Rides Safe for Children?
The first question every parent asks when considering a camel ride in Marrakech is about safety. The honest answer is that camel rides are very safe for children when conducted by experienced operators with well-trained animals and professional handlers. The key variables are the quality of the operator, the condition of the camels and the experience of the guides — all of which vary significantly in Marrakech.
At Quad Morocco, our camels are selected for their gentle temperament and are handled exclusively by experienced Berber camel handlers who have worked with these animals their entire lives. Every camel ride for children is conducted with a handler walking alongside, leading the camel by the reins. There is no unsupervised riding, and the route is carefully chosen to avoid uneven terrain that could unsettle the animal.
What Age Can Children Ride Camels?
There is no strict universal minimum age for camel riding, but most operators recommend a minimum of 8 years for independent riding. Younger children (typically 3–7 years) can ride in front of an adult, creating a tandem arrangement that is both safe and enjoyable. Very young children and infants are not recommended for camel riding due to the lack of core muscle control needed to maintain balance during the animal's movement.
How to Prepare Your Children for a Camel Ride
The mounting process — particularly the dramatic lurch when the camel stands up — can be startling for children who aren't prepared. Explain in advance what's going to happen: "The camel will kneel down, you'll climb on, and then it will stand up which feels a bit like a rollercoaster. Hold on tight and lean back slightly." Children who are warned find it exciting rather than frightening.
Some younger children may be nervous about the animal's size up close. If this is the case, it helps to spend a moment letting them interact with the camel while it's kneeling — patting its neck and getting used to its presence before mounting. Experienced guides are well-practised in this confidence-building process.
What to Wear and Bring
For children's camel rides, comfortable trousers are preferred over shorts to prevent rubbing on the saddle. Closed-toe shoes are safer than sandals during mounting and dismounting. A sun hat is essential, as are sunscreen and a small water bottle. Most importantly, make sure phones and cameras are securely fastened — excited children on camelback have been known to drop phones!
Combining the Camel Ride with Other Family Activities
The camel ride works best as part of a family adventure package rather than as a standalone experience. Our Family Quad & Camel Ride combines smaller quad bikes (suitable for children aged 8+) with a camel ride through the Palmeraie, creating a two-hour adventure that keeps energy levels high throughout. The quad section appeals particularly to older children and teenagers, while the camel ride tends to be a favourite for younger children.
Our Family Quad & Camel Ride is specifically designed for families with children — patient guides, age-appropriate equipment and gentle camels.
